Department Scholarships
The Department offers postgraduate support in the form of the Beverly Trust Fund Postgraduate Scholarship. For PhD study this currently pays New Zealand domestic fees and a stipend of $20,000 per annum for up to 3 years. For Masters (MSc or MA), it pays New Zealand domestic fees and a stipend of $13,000 for 1 year of study.
Scholarship recipients, including Beverly Trust scholars, have no obligations to teach or to mark course work unless they want to supplement their scholarships by earning extra money; they can spend all their time on their research projects if they so wish.
Graduate students can also be supported directly from research grants on stipends that are set by the granting agency but are often of similar size. In addition, the Department supports some of its graduate students as part-time Teaching Assistants. Teaching Assistants take a small number of tutorials or help sessions per week (typically 5 contact hours and 5 hours for preparation), for which they receive a salary and have their domestic fees paid.

University Scholarships
The University offers a number of scholarships for study at different levels, and may be able to help students find external funding.
The Scholarships web-page gives details of University of Otago Undergraduate Scholarships, Postgraduate Scholarships (ordinary and prestige), International Undergraduate Scholarships and International Postgraduate Scholarships. It also has a useful Scholarships Database Search facility to help you find organizations that can help you with financial support. Many organizations outside of the University, both abroad and within New Zealand and including governments offshore, offer scholarships to help potential students realize their educational goals.
