Quantitative Genetics Group
The Quantitative Genetics Group is part of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Otago. It was formed in October, 2014 and funded by Beef and Lamb New Zealand Genetics via a Research Partnerships fund with Beef and Lamb NZ and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. It also has support from the University of Otago.
A main goal is to provide an environment and critical mass for applied quantitative genetics and train and maintain expert capability in genetics. A research focus is to develop innovative ways to use and understand genetic information and to disseminate outcomes from this that can improve our biological industries. A current focus is to develop new infrastructure for the NZ Sheep industry for genetic evaluations. This new system will allow better estimates of genetic merit to be obtained on millions of animals which can include data on pedigree, traits and from DNA.
